World Ovarian Cancer Day

World Ovarian Cancer Day

May 8th, 2025

World Ovarian Cancer Day (WOCD) is the one day of the year we unite across the globe to raise our voices in solidarity to raise awareness of ovarian cancer and stand with every person affected.

Established in 2013 by the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition (WOCC), this internationally recognised day is now supported by more than 200 organisations worldwide. It has become a powerful expression of unity - bringing the ovarian cancer community together to elevate voices, raise awareness and drive meaningful change.

This #WOCD2025, we continue to champion WOCC’s multi-year campaign theme: No Woman Left Behind. We're calling on our community to help amplify this powerful message by using the hashtags #NoWomanLeftBehind, #WOCD2025, and #WorldOvarianCancerDay on May 8 across your social channels. Every post helps raise awareness and drive impact.

Ovarian Cancer Australia is committed to changing the future of ovarian cancer by advocating for greater investment in research, expanding access to more effective and affordable treatments, and amplifying the voices of our community to drive the urgent change they deserve. Until that change comes, we’re here — providing vital clinical and psychological support to everyone facing ovarian cancer today.

Progress has been made, but the work is far from done.  We have a real opportunity not only to raise hope but to drive meaningful progress—and ensure that no woman is left behind.

Projections indicate that nearly 12 million women worldwide will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer by 2050.

In Australia, approximately 2,822 women will be diagnosed each year, representing a 58% increase.

With a five-year survival rate of just 49% and a reoccurrence rate of up to 70% within three years, greater equity and investment in research and care are urgently needed. We must move forward, not just for those facing ovarian cancer today, but for future generations.

So, on this World Ovarian Cancer Day, we acknowledge every person and family impacted by ovarian cancer. We are here for you, and we walk alongside you. To every supporter and partner standing with us. We are so grateful, thank you!

Together with WOCC and our peers across the sector, we’re driving coordinated action. Our collective voices are a powerful force to drive change, ensuring support for those affected throughout their diagnosis, treatment, and beyond.

The team at Ovarian Cancer Australia invites you to get involved in any way you can this World Ovarian Cancer Day. Because together, we can ensure no woman walks alone.

New Data Reveals the Socio-Economic Burden of Ovarian Cancer in Australia

Led by our partners at the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition, in collaboration with Ovarian Cancer Australia (OCA), new Australian-specific data from the Socio-Economic Burden Study highlights the social and economic toll of ovarian cancer in our community.

A$3.8 billion annually – this is the cost of ovarian cancer in Australia, affecting not only families but our entire community and healthcare system. This crucial data emphasises the importance of OCA’s work and the sector’s collective efforts to drive change - focused on prevention, early detection, effective treatments and provision of specialist support for women and families affected by ovarian cancer.

Nursing and psycho-social support through programs like OCA’s Teal Support Program provide essential care that can alleviate the burden on both individuals and the healthcare system — an important contribution, especially in light of this data.

OCA is proud to have supported this study since its inception. For a long time, there has been a gap in data concerning the socio-economic burden of ovarian cancer. This study addresses key questions, not only regarding the cost to the healthcare system of diagnosis and treatment, but also the wider societal and economic costs, including the tragic loss of lives to ovarian cancer.
